  Singapore is an island city-state and the smallest country in Southeast Asia.

It is on the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula, south of the Malaysian state of Johor and north of the Indonesian Riau Islands. It is 137 kilometres (85 miles) north of the Equator.

Singapore consists of 63 islands. There are two connections from Singapore to Johor. There is a man-made causeway known as the Johor-Singapore Causeway to the north and the Tuas Second Link which is a bridge in the western part of Singapore that also connects to Johor.

Jurong Island, Pulau Tekong, Pulau Ubin and Sentosa are the largest of Singapore's many smaller islands. The highest point of Singapore is Bukit Timah Hill, with a height of 166 metres (538 ft).

Singapore has a tropical climate with no distinct seasons. It has a uniform temperature and pressure, high humidity and abundant rainfall.

Temperatures range from 22°C to 34 °C. On average the relative humidity is around 90% in the morning and 60% in the afternoon.

Singapore has a highly developed market-based economy, and is often considered to be a developed nation.

It ranks 25th on the Human Development Index which measures standard of living, and the second in the Index of Economic Freedom.

Although Singapore has one of the highest per capita gross domestic products (GDP) in the world, the domestic demand is relatively low due to the small population.

The architecture of Singapore is extremely varied and diverse. Due to the lack of available space few historical buildings remain in the urban areas of Singapore. However, Singapore has become a centre for modern architecture as older buildings are cleared away to make space for newer, larger buildings.

Singapore is the second most densely populated independent country in the world with over eighty percent of the population living in public housing provided by the Housing and Development Board.

In June 2005 the population was 4.35 million and is racially diverse.

Singapore is also a multi-religious country due to its location on one of the world's major transportation routes.

More than 40% of Singaporeans say they are Buddhist however there is a lack of distinction between Taoism, Confucianism, Buddhism and ancestral worship are merged into one religion by most of the Chinese population.

Most Muslims are Malay and 14% of the population are Christians.
